Looking for Walnut? What happened to it, and an alternative
Walnut, the SMS-based expense tracker, is now called axio. It was acquired by Capital Float in 2018, and its app today offers expense tracking alongside credit products such as Pay Later and loans. If you want an SMS expense tracker that only tracks your money, ArthPulse is one option.
What happened to Walnut
- 2018: Capital Float acquired Walnut (then run by Pune-based Thumbworks Technologies), in a deal reported at about USD 30 million.
- Since then: the app was rebranded as axio, the brand of CapFloat Financial Services Private Limited, an NBFC registered with the Reserve Bank of India.
- Today: the axio app still includes expense tracking, and also offers credit: Pay Later (which was earlier called Walnut 369) and personal loans.
Plenty of people are happy with that combination. Others only ever wanted the tracking, and would rather their expense tracker was not also a lender. If that is you, read on.
ArthPulse: an SMS expense tracker that only tracks
ArthPulse works the way Walnut users will recognise: it reads the transaction alerts your bank, cards and UPI apps already send by SMS, and turns them into a categorised record of your money, with no manual entry.
- Tracking only. No loans, no pay-later, no credit products of any kind.
- Private by design. No bank login, no ads, no third-party trackers in the app, and your data is never sold. On the Google Play version, OTPs and personal messages are dropped on your phone before anything is uploaded. How we protect your data.
- AI on our own servers sorts every transaction and learns from your corrections.
- Money in and out: salary, refunds and savings alongside every spend (salary tracking).
- Every card's due date and outstanding, with card bill payments kept out of your spending (card tracking).
- Phone and web: the Android app plus a web dashboard.
Moving from Walnut or axio
There is nothing to import. Install ArthPulse, allow SMS access, and it processes about the last month of your bank alerts on first sign-in, so you start with a full picture straight away. You can keep both apps while you decide.
Good to know
- Android only for automatic tracking. iPhones do not let apps read SMS.
- ArthPulse is independent. It has no connection to Walnut, axio or Capital Float.
